Plath (1932-1963) was educated at Smith College (A.B., 1955) and Newnham College, Cambridge University (A.B., 1957). She married Ted Hughes in 1956 and taught English at Smith College, 1957-1958. Plath and Hughes returned to England in Dec. 1959 and separated in 1962. In her lifetime she published two books: The Colossus and other poems (1960) and The bell jar (1963). Assia Wevill was born Assia Gutman on May 15, 1927, in Berlin, Germany. Her mother, Lisa, was a German Protestant, and her father, Lonya, was a Russian Jew. In the late 1930s, the family fled to Tel Aviv to escape the Nazis. Wevill first married John Steel in London in 1946, and from there emigrated to Canada, sending visas to her family in Israel.
